After weaving through the labyrinth of stairwells, corridors and local security, we've finally found our way into the Rattle Snake (backstage at the Stones concert). It's just like it is in every town, country and continent. Tables are packed with local DJ's, handful of lawyers, old friends, family that happen to live in the area, and a cast of faces that always seem to be there. The one thing you don't see is the Stones.

Before Kruger is able to take his first bite of the caterer's shepards pie, an assistant spots him and rushes him further back into the inner sanctum, knowing the 'boys' will want to see the artist right away. Sliding behind the heavy black drapes that segregate the band from their court, the word is already spreading, that Kruger is in the house.

First to poke his head out of a dressing room door is Charlie. "They said you were town, really great to see you. I wish I could have caught your art opening last night, but you kno...". Then from around the corner, a grumbling voice snarls, "f-------------k, you made it." Keith slides out from his draped den and throws his arms around Kruger like his brother returned from the war.

Artist often choose to dedicate part of their career to being a master of one subject. Sometimes places, or even themes. And this is the case for Kruger, if there is one subject he knows better then any other, it's Keith Richards.

Sebastian Kruger over the years has devoted the talents of a master painter (perhaps of our time) to describe in fine visceral nuance the great personalities of popular culture. A great art in and of itself. But to capture the otherwise

enigmatic Keith Richards as a painter, is comparable to knowing the many crevices of Everest as a mountain climber.

Kruger has over the past couple decades told many tales of Keith Richards through his work. But last summer he was driven by the desire to capture the "young Keith in his youthful prime".

Dressed in leopard print, a Japanese silk scarf, an oversized bow-tie and his suede guitar strap threading in-between it all, it screams of a time and place where a young Keith Richards lived to his fullest.

"There's always this thing in show business - you have an 'image', and you play it to the hilt. I'm not the guys I see on MTV who obviously think they're me. There are so many people who think that's all there is to it. It's not that easy to be Keith Richards. But it's not so hard, either. The main thing is to know yourself." - Keith Richards
