Brush with greatness: Honoree blends sports with arts

Who knew sports and fine art could co-exist?

Sport artist Opie Otterstad will unveil the Chicago White Sox team painting, while being honored as the United States Sports Academy’s Sport Artist of the Year 2006 at Gallery 319 in Santa Monica on Feb. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. The art show is open to the public. Otterstad is painting the Chicago White Sox World Series team a year after doing the same for the Boston Red Sox. The original painting is for sale and will be officially licensed by Major League Baseball.

In December, Otterstad was named the 2006 sport artist of the year by the American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA).

Otterstad was among hundreds of sports artist from around the world nominated for this prestigious annual award. The ASAMA art committee, which consists of respected national artists and curators, vote annually to decide the world’s top sport artist.

Otterstad, a painter from Austin, Texas, travels frequently and stays busy accepting numerous commissions to create depictions of sporting events and sportsmen. His works include assignments to paint pictures honoring Houston Astros’ pitcher Roger Clemens and the Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series championship collage.Past recipients of the sports artist of the year include Daniel Moore, Stephen Holland, Charles Billich, Ernie Barnes, James Rizzi and Mina Papatheodorou-Valyraki.

ASAMA houses what is believed to be the largest collection of fine sport art in the world and is dedicated to the collection, display and preservation of sports history, art and literature. The museum exhibits world-renowned sport artists Hans Erni, Charles Billich, Ernie Barnes and the famed Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón.

The United States Sports Academy, “America’s sport university,” is an independent, nonprofit institution that offers sport-specific programs to students, teachers, and administrators around the world. The Academy’s mission is to serve the sports industry as a resource in instruction, research, and other sports-related services. It is the only freestanding institution of higher learning in the United States offering masters and doctoral degrees in sport science and sport management, in addition to its certification programs.
